Cool Ideas for Cool Teachers

Presented by Isabelle Giroux

This workshop is based on the book I Am Not a Number (by Jenny Kay Dupuis & Kathy Kacer).

Designed for Secondary 2 ESL students, both Core and Enriched, this workshop connects the topic of Truth and Reconciliation with ways to bring the story’s powerful themes into the classroom.

A Learning and Evaluation Situation that targets all three ESL competencies will be presented. It includes ready-to-use tasks to help students connect with the text, deepen their comprehension and develop empathy as they engage in meaningful discussions and reflection.

I Am Not a Number

Tired of labelling? Cut and glue activities are becoming repetitive? You want your students to use more English?

This workshop focuses on how to create enjoyable learning experiences for elementary students in cycle 1, and aims at boosting both student and teacher engagement.

Participants will explore different tools and ideas to make lessons fun, interactive, and motivating, while fostering a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active participation and excitement for learning.

This session will include practical ideas and activities that can be easily implemented to enhance student and enthusiasm in ESL.

How to Have Fun With 1st Cycle

Presented by Annie-Pierre Fauteux & Rachèle Gilbert

Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the promoters of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) have not stopped promising a revolution in the way that we learn. On the ground, however, the technology has mainly forced teachers to reconsider the way they assess students. As GenAI can write a text of any length in seconds and can provide a convincing answer to almost any question, many of the traditional evaluation formats have had to be adapted or replaced entirely.

Assessment in the era of GenAI is a wicked problem for which there is no simple solution. In this workshop, we are going to have a look at what makes assessment and GenAI a wicked problem, we are going to discuss what GenAI can do and what it means for your teaching, and, finally, we are going to explore a variety of alternative, AI-proof, assessment methods.

By the end, you should have all the tools necessary to better understand the potential of GenAI and to put in place assessments that will truly evaluate your students’ work.

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." - The quest for AI-proff assessment methods in ESL
